Should dogs be lightly punished?

Question:Some of my friends say that when training you should give a small whack to the head when it does something wrong, some say to just award when right.

Answers:
I work with a trainer, and the only time she allows physical punishment is if the dog bites, growls, or displays any aggressive behavior, in which case the reprimand is NOT to hit the dog, but to tap the end of his nose firmly. Ceasar Milan endorses a firm but gentle shove to the side of the neck to imitate the neck-biting correction a fellow dog would give. Smacking the head or spanking the bottom are NOT appropriate punishments because they do not fit into a dog's way of thinking, and serve only to cause pain and create fear, not to correct an issue.

For example, if a dog is told to sit, and doesn't, physical correction is not appropriate in the least. The failure to respond should be ignored, and when the dog does sit on command, he should be rewarded. However, if you touch a dog's paw and he snaps at you, a tap to the nose or pressure to the neck would be appropriate to establish physical dominance over the dog and show him that his behavior will not be tolerated. Behavior like hyperactivity and nuisance barking is often best solved by a 'shaker', a plastic bottle with a handful of coins in it to create a loud distraction. When the dog is startled and falls quiet, you can give a command 'No Bark!" and reward him for his silence. He'll quickly learn the words and no longer need the noise.

I never hit my dog. I did her whole training through positive reinforcement. She is well-trained. There is no reason to hit.
Never... Its cruelty
you don't hit them on the head! what if your mom did that to you everytime you made a mistake?

you say NO, and use a squirt gun. smack them on the bottom if nothing else works. reward if they do something well.
No, it's wrong to hit your dog. This might make the dog afraid of you. (Or he'll get aggressive). If he does something wrong just say "No" in a strict/firm voice. When he gets it right award him.
Lots of people have opinions on how to train dogs. Most of their opinions are wrong.

Your friends are idiots. You NEVER hit a dog.. Hitting lets a dog know that you have no idea how to train a dog.. Only fools hit dogs to try and make them do what they want.. Normal people train their dogs, praise their dogs, encourage their dogs.. Fools hit their dogs cause they don't know how to properly train a dog, and they are abusive people..
You want a dog that doesn't respect you, thinks you are a fool, and eventually challenges you?? Then go ahead and hit the dog.. But eventually you will be asking why your dog hates you and bit you and the kid up the street and the mail man and everyone you run into..
well i think you should treat dogs like your kid when they need love so give dog love and when you know that your is not doing something right and just like your kids you should allways punish them by doing this your dogs will know that if he do something wrong he is going to get punished so he wont do it again. so thats what i do with my dog really!!
I have never hit my dog NOT even a small wack to the head. NEVER EVER do that to a dog no matter how gentle you think you are. All that does is make the dog scared of you and that you don't want. When it does something wrong use the words like: no or bad. But when they do something right you can reward them with a treat or praises such as: good boy/girl. good dog, pet them gently on the head or back, or hug them. You can either take this advice or pass it off. I do this with my dogs and have never had problems and they learn quick once they know what each word means. And are eager to learn something new. You just have to be patient and see what you dog responds to.
No One should every Smack/hit a dog any where on its body!!!
If you want to correct it for something, give it a verbal warning, such as enough, no and take it out of that situation.
Three things that are universial
1. Ignore the behaviour, no talk, touch or eye contact
2.Give a warning
3. It hasn't listened, take action and walk away, put it down so on.

Combined those three things are you will be fine.
NB: The dog will try harder to get your attention, but still ignore this and Good Luck
your friends are wrong. all this is going to teach your dog is to be afraid of your hand. as for how to train it's going to depend on what you're trying to train. keep in mind a dog can only understand what it's doing wrong if you catch it in the act. minutes or hours later and as far as the dog knows you're just nuts and yelling at them for no reason. when you catch your dog doing something wrong. tell them NO in a firm and loud but not yelling voice. then make them sit. this will not only tell the dog that it was doing wrong, but also you are in charge. after your dog has sat for a few moments let them get up and resume whatever you were doing. they have now either forgotten what is was you were yelling about. or if you have been conisitant in telling the dog no to this action, this might be the one time your dog thinks, oh ok i can't do this. be patient, consistent and loving when training. for your friends who said smack the dog in the head, when they're doing wrong try doing that to them and see how the react and how they like it.
Your friends are wrong...you should never hit your dog in the head. I've trained quite a few dogs, and positive reinforcement gets the best results.

Hitting your dog in the head can create an aggressive dog, and fear is not an effective or acceptable way to train a dog.
The reason your friends recommend hitting your dog, is that they are too lazy to employ good training techniques, and instead choose to react to misbehavior with outbursts of their own uncontrolled anger.

Hitting will actually SET BACK training, not move it forward. I think if you really look at it, most of our dogs' bad behaviors are our own fault...they potty in the house because we aren't paying attention to what they are doing, they are hyper because we aren't giving them enough exercise and mental stimulation, etc.

Get a good book on positive reinforcement, and do what your lazy friends won't: follow the book's advice. You'll be glad you did, and you'll have a better dog to show for it!
yes
Never ever hit an animal. That is not how you train them. I suggest that you go on the Internet or borrow a book from the library to help you learn about how to train your dog. DO NOT listen to your friends
A dog should NEVER be hit no matter what. The way you punish a dog is all with your tone of voice. When your dog does something wrong you give a stern voice command from deep in your chest, Not yelling but a deep growl. Say "No" or "Behave" or "knock it off". This is how the mother dog controls her pups in the wild. She crumbles at them and they stop what they are doing and respect her. As they see her as being the leader.
oh lordy my friend did that... then when i tried to pay her she closed ehr eyes and mover her head to the left [patting from right] it was so horrible =[
Think about that again and replace "dog" with "baby". Now what do you think?
