I just got a schipperke, they stay between 10 and 15 pounds. They have lots of energy so they are so fun to play with. I got mine about a month ago and he already plays fetch! They are very smart, he is also already pretty much potty trained!

You should get a toy poodle. I had one for 14 years, she was spunky, playful and really affectionate! Toy poodles usually weigh 4-9 pounds so they totally have the cute factor:)
If you want a really active dog, get a Jack Russell Terrier. They're cute and never slow down.

I own a Pomeranian and she is only 9 lbs and will not get any bigger. They are adorable as long as you like to keep up with their grooming. They are VERY playful and good with children.
there are a lot of small breed dogs and also some great little "mutt" dogs. If you do not care if it is a purebred I would recomend that you visit a shelter , the kind or breed does not matter so much as the dogs personality and how good a match the two of you are

Oh my, there's a lot of answers to this one! There are lots of small dogs and they're all cute and fun to play with.
A lot will depend on personal preference but there are things to think about - such as do you want a long-haired breed ?(it will need daily grooming), how small do you mean? (teeny-weeny chihuahua or bouncy coton-de-tulear), is it to be a lap-dog or do you want to be able to play fetch in the park? and there's lots more questions to ask yourself.
If you would like a small dog that can run and play with you, and has tons of energy look at the terrier breeds, the Jack Russell terrier for example...or maybe a toy poodle? If you want a tiny lapdog to cuddle, you could consider a chihuahua or a teacup Yorkshire Terrier. Bear in mind that the very small dogs can get injured easily and just stepping on them, or dropping them from even a low height can cause serious injuries.
All individual dog breeds have different personalities and strengths and you need to pick one that suits your lifestyle and personality as well. Find out as much as you can about the breeds that interest you and take your time choosing.
A puppy grows into a dog, who lives up to 15 years (depending upon breed, health factors etc) and if you choose unwisely you may be disappointed later. Owning a dog is a huge commitment but, if you choose wisely, can be one of the most rewarding experiences in your life! Good luck
that depends on many things... remember that the smaller the dog, the longer it's lifespan and the more demanding they are. It takes much longer to toilet train a small dog.. fact... a chihuahua is notorious for being really difficult to train for example. Often the smaller the dog the more exercise they require as they have much more stamina than larger dogs, contrary to popular belief.. also they usually bark a whole lot more, too. Smaller dogs are usually more nervous dogs.. meaning they are much more likely to fear bite than larger breeds.
we own both a chihuahua and a ridgeback x, both are very different but the chihuahua has more energy and is faster. She is very affectionate however.. and hates being left alone for even just an hour.
If you want fun to play with, forget the jack russel.. they are notoriously stubborn. Most terrier families are not very playful dogs, either.
I would suggest more the springer spaniels.. gentle, loving, easy to train, they love to play and are very cute.

Get a mini schnauzer-they are so funny playful and very smart and lovable. We have a little boy, we didn't plan on getting him, but we picked him up to look at him in a pet shop and couldn't put him down, he was so affectionate, so we bought him 6 years ago and he's a great dog.

Why don't you look up dog rescues in your area & tell them exactly what you want? Their job is to place the pup in a home that it will stay in, so they won't push the wrong kind, or a bad match on you just to get rid of it...they want to find permanant homes. I used to foster for various rescue organizations (purbred & mutt) while in college & made it clear I did not have structured schedule & would only foster a housetrained dog that got along with all animals, & they always gave me the perfect match! Purbred rescues DO get puppies, & sometimes a mutt is all you need! If you don't know what you want, you should instead write down everything you want in a dog (looks (fluffy, short hair), shedding, hyperness, attention, obedience, etc) & send it out to various organizations as well as local shelters. Once, when I worked at an animal shelter we actually got a purbred German Shepherd that was actually shipped from Germany (his owner got deployed unexpectedly) & his papers were in German! Not a cheap dog by any means. You can find anything you desire, & these places are supposed to find a good match for you. Our family dog is small & so adorable & so playful, you can wake him up in the middle of the night & throw a toy & he will run after it, & 6 years ago I crawled under a trailor (mobile home) to get him! There are certain breeds that are not a good fit for you if you've never had a dog, no matter how small & cute they are, & there are certain things you must learn about your dog if you get a purbred...some require constant grooming, some, like bulldogs, make great pets & are so adorable, but can be stuborn & walk all over you if you don't know how to assert yourself as the dominant one in the relationship. Explain to these people what you need & you shouldn't have a problem finding what you want. Just go to any search engine & type in "dog rescues in (insert your hometown here)". Also, try www..petfinder.com..you can put in various stipulations as to what you want. Do not buy from a pet store, for these pups are often from puppy mills & are overbred or inbred & often have many health problems you won't discover until many expensive medical bills later. As well as the fact they are over charging for the quality of "purbred" you are getting. Pet stores are the worse place to buy a puppy...you're better off getting from a breeder in the paper...same goes for those people that sell dogs on the side of the road, cute-yes, well bred-no..which can result in a lot of problems in purbreds. the top contributor has the stupidest answer! go to your local shelter and you'll find the one you want. if your willing to give a dog a home, a shelter dog is waiting for you.

Gayle L has the right idea. You should try a shelter first. A lot of times they can tell what breeds the dogs are made up of. I have a Dashaund and Cocker Spaniel mix that's 13 years old and he still looks like a little puppy. He's very loving and smart. He was a frisky puppy too. I got him at the Humane Society. I also have a pure bred pug and a pure bred papillon that were gifts. They are great dogs too. Any mix of either of them would be a good choice.
