Question:My husband and I adopted a dog from the SPCA about a month ago. He was 8 1/2 months when we got him. His original owner was a 86 yr. old woman who left him and his brother outside since they have been born. She took good care of the Mother dog though. Anyway, he refuses to pee outside. I just got him going poop outside in the morning when I wake up. No problems, other than he refuses to pee while hes out there. Within minutes of being inside and soon as i turn my head, hes peeing on the floor. I clap my hands really loud and yell NO! Sometimes he'll stop until I can get him to his crate so that he can hold it for a couple minutes then take him out and he goes. but most of the time, i yell no and grab him and he wont stop going! HELP ME. My apartment spells like dog pee!
BTW, does anybody know how to get the SMELL of urine out of the carpet?
Answers:
It may simply be a matter of keeping him outside for longer in the morning -- if he really can't hold it much longer than it takes to get inside the house, he'll have to do it outside if you make him stay there until he's done his duty. The previous poster who suggested walking him to let him smell where other dogs have marked isn't a bad idea, either -- if he gets the idea that other dogs pee outside, he might do the same.
As for the smell, it's a pretty tough thing to get out of carpet. I use Nature's Miracle, which is an enzymatic odor eliminator, but you have to soak the carpet down pretty well with the stuff, it may take several applications and definitely takes more than the bottle says... but it does work. Don't use Febreeze or an air freshener, because they only cover the smell, and don't necessarily eliminate the source. Since the smell is primarily from the urea decomposing over time to release ammonia, you can try treating the carpet with a vinegar and water solution, but I'd test it on a patch of carpet hidden from view, to make sure it won't also cause the color of your carpet to bleed in the process.
Have you tried beating your dog whenever it pees in the house? Getting urine out of the carpet is hard to do. The best bet is to get a steamer and steam it out with water and soap.
You just have to walk him and let him smell where other dogs have peed until he goes too.
i have a dog that when she gets excited she will pee if you touch her, so what i did was everytime i got home was to take her outside and soon she got over it. for your dog i would take the dog outside every 1 1/2 to 2 hrs and try and make it pee and everytime you take it outside tell it to "potty" or "go pee" but use a consitant words and make them very clear. and IF they pee be very excited and happy and play and pet them give them a treat. but even when you wait for what seems like forever for them to go you have to let them take their time and one day it should hopefully become something that you dont have to worry about! good luck and we use Resolve for Pets on our carpet!
This is a problem. My dog did this a lot. What you have to do is this, take his crate and put it out side. Every time you take him out, close the door. He won't be able to hold it in any longer and he will go out side. This is what my dog did all the time. He thinks that this is his place and he makes the rules. Like cats, dogs don't like going out side. I got my dog to go right to the door when having to go pee. When its raining out side, leave out him till he goes potty. He will start to learn that your the owner, you make the rules and he's doesn't. Don't worry! Keep doing this and he'll stop!
It's harder with older dogs. Harley was easy to train because I got him young, but Maddie was harder because she was 10 months old when I got her. It was alot harder, and I'm still cleaning up the occasional accident. You have to be really patient. Ignore him when he pees in the house. A few minutes later put him outside and clean it up while he's not around. A mixture of vinegar and water (I used half and half) will remove the smell, but then you have to air out your house or use lysol to get the vinegar smell out of the carpet. Never clean up a mess in front of the dog. My vet told me it's actually rewarding to them to watch you clean it up. If the dog wasn't used to getting attention before, scolding a dog for an accident is giving it attention. They will look for attention from you whether it's positive or negative attention. Ignore, clean up when the dog leaves the room, and award them with loads of praise and treats when he goes outside to pee or poo. Eventually he'll get the hang of it. It took a while for Maddie to get the hang of it. I also used to give her a big bowl of water while she was outside, so she'd drink more out there while playing, and it would trigger her bladder.
first off, dsaf f should be beaten for giving such an answer!
Now, for your problem--keep your dog out for a longer period of time. and as soon as you bring him in, put him back in the kennel for a few minutes, then let him out again. I have three dogs, and one goes out, comes back in, and then I have to let him out again!! This is every day! As for the smell, there are a number of products you can buy from pet stores that will eliminate the odor. Good luck!!
