Kong toys, they're durable and you can stuff them with treats, keeps dogs busy for a long time.

Depends on the dog and how much involvement you want to put in. Lots of dogs love tennis balls, but they usually want you to throw the ball for them (a lot) Chew toys and bones are toys they are usually happy with by themselves.
some times squeaky toys are best but some dogs prefer bones or other things like balls
peanut butter balls are awesome for when you are going to leave for quite a few hours...
rope toys for tug of war, especially the ones that are made to floss their teeth
zap ball... it's like a light up ball and kinda red. dogs LOVE em.
and my dogs like the lazer pointer better than the cat does!

Now that she is older, my dog real only play with soft, cloth balls. They come in a box that she can pull them out of too. But when she and my sister's dog was younger they loved this green treat ball. It would roll on the floor and dispense dry dog food.
