I am so discouraged w/ housetraining 9m puppy pees in his crate?

Question:I am up on everything! 9m old yorkie. At4 months paper trained from breeder. We took the paper away to crate train..expecting accident. Have him on a eating/walking schedule ( Have to admit w/ 3 kids and husband who now travels a lot not consistant but close to it) He will hold it MOST of the time through the night but not in the day. I'm home in the day and he has been so good for a while . I would just leave the door open and he'd take himself outside.Sometimes he doesn't now and never will in the rain.even if I'm w/him. Today I took him for a walk.no pee and we came back and I caught him going inside, told him no, brought him outside to finish. Nothing so..put him in his crate to wait and take him out again. When I went back he already peed. I'll take him for a walk or make sure he pees before i go any where and I come back in a few hrs and he's peed in his crate. I do the reward we clean up with nature' M. I'll get a walker for the AM. Do I start over?

Please don't be angry. Your dog falls into the "normal" category. Toy breeds are naturally harder to house train. If you go to the search bar and search for "Yorkie house training", you will be shocked on how many people have your same frustration. Yorkies are not the only breed - Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Maltese, Min Pins, etc all have the same problem.

It's also not unusual for your dog not to let you know when he has to go outside.

My advice is keep working with him. Be patient, consistent and kind. My Poms are both 5 years old and they still potty in the house once in a while. (every couple of weeks - more in the winter and I am home all the time with them)

take him to the vet & see if he has a UTI

is he neutered? the kids are definately a problem with any puppy - makes it much harder.

toy dogs are difficult - very small bladders.

keep in mind that he was taught to go IN the house when you got him
Make sure the crate is only big enough for him to comfortably stand, turn around, and lay back down. If the crate is too big, he will go in one end of it. Also, make sure there is nothing in the crate with him (like a pillow or blanket), because if there is, he will use those to go potty on because they are absorbable.
In his crate make sure its not big enough for ur puppy to pee in one side and then still have enough room to go to the other. Also, if u have a towel in the crate and he pees on it take it away, because some dogs will pee on the towel and then push it to the side. Dogs do not like urinating and then sitting in it, so they wont go in the crate if its a) the right size, and b) theres no towel for them to go on and push it away. Ur pups 4 months now he should b able to hold for at least 4 hours, if not longer. And he should be able to make it through the night. One thing not to do is scold ur dog when he's peeing in the house. No doesn't mean anything to ur puppy, and it wont solve the situation. If you call your puppies name when he's peeing, believe it or not if he looks at you, then you have to say good boy. Essentially, he's just doing what u commanded, responding when you call his name. So if u call his name and even though he's in the middle of peeing if he looks at u, u have to somehow reward him. The best thing to do while he's peeing is immediately pick him up and take him outside without saying a word to him. Also, when ur outside if u have him on a snug leash most likely he will not pee. Dogs sometimes will not pee under two conditions, 1) if the leash is too tight and their muscles aren't relaxed. 2) if u are right over them, give him some space he needs privacy. Hope this helped, these are great tips that I myself learned in puppy training class from a very respectable trainer.
i have 5 yorkies and the very first one was a female and the second one i got was a male and thats all he ever did was pee pee pee that lasted about a year me and my family were about to give up but then he got are female pregnant then we new we need to get him fixed so that it didnt happen again!! so i did some research and we found out that if u get your dog fixed it should help with the accidents.the reason for it helping is that the puppy/dog isnt always marking his territory!! o we got him fixed and we havent had and accident since then.and now we have 3 healthy puppies..So i hope this helped trust me getting your dog fixed will help so much i promise!! good luck!!
Firstly, is he neutered? He may be marking. Yorkies are very stubborn and can take a while to train them at anything. I have a 9 month old pug, she's spayed, but once in a while has peed in the house even with access to outside. They need constant and repetitive training. Can the children help with the walking or playtime in the yard? You will always be teaching them something, all of their life. Remember exercise, discipline, affection. Discipline being training. At the top is you the pack leader, then the children, then the dog. Don't forget he is a dog first, your little friend or baby second.
I'm not really sure on this one. I have a 2 1/2 year old male Saint Bernard who ended up being an outside dog because I never did get him to stop peeing in the house. I also think that small dog breeds tend to be a little harder to housetrain, maybe because they are more affected by rain and snow.

One thing you may want to do is have your vet check his urine. He might be fine, but one of the top signs of urinary tract infections in pets is urinating where they shouldn't. The fact that you say he was good for a while and is starting to pee in the house again makes me wonder. Have you noticed him drinking more water as well? If so, I would definitely be on the phone to your vet.
Hmm...thats a toughy. one thing i've come to see through my dog and other people's dog is that a good dog is house broken early. As they get older, the will learn that there are something that they can get away with and sometime this behavior is hard to break. I have a yorkie-poo and we started training her from the day we got her at 2 months. Try buying the floor pads (which can be bought at your local pet store/ walmart in the pet section) and also the peeing spray. Place it close to the crate and your dog should natural start to use it. The first couple times this happens he should be rewarded with a treat. As he adopts to peeing on the pad move it closer to the door and finally outside and spray the grass to attract him to the grass. Be consistant with your schedule and discipline. Take him out at the same time every morining and night and feed him at specific times to avoid accidents. Do be discouraged be patient with him specially if you see that he's catching on. Good luck :)
He is still a puppy and can' t hold it for very long probably. Someone needs to be consistant in taking him outside to pee at least every hour for a couple days straight to show him that is where he is supposed to pee. He thinks that he is supposed to go in his crate. Check out this website.
