Question:I don't have an awning or anything to go under. I tried to hold an umbrella over her. But she is scared of the rain. She is a four month old german shepherd and is housebroken. She did not go in the house and then I waited until she couldn't hold it anymore and took her outside and she did go. But now I dread the next time she has to go.
Answers:
I bought a rain coat for my dog, he loved it and now won't go out in the rain without it.
Get her out in the rain more often and see if that helps. Maybe if you get her used to it, she may not be afraid.
Umbrella?...Many dogs just don't like being alone.wet or devoid of proper smell and hearing rain takes away from them from the defensive nature they are stuck in.
My dog did the same thing, until one day I had enough. It was raining out, I'm holding an umbrella, already late for work, phones ringing, etc. It went on for months. So, I left her out there. I stood on the inside of the door. She stood by the door getting soaking wet. I just refused to let her in until she went. It took a couple of times. Now, she knows, either hurry up or get soaked. Haven't had a problem yet.
Keep using positive reinforcement but the main thing is when rain season starts...keep her under a watchful eye (I highly suggest harness o your dog with leash and leash tied to your belt) and when you see the dog start to signal it needs to go...you go with it...don't assume she go on her own...and if you have to...be prepared to stand out there with her in the rain.
The first couple times it was raining I stayed outside with my dog until she went to the bathroom until she realized she had to go to the bathroom before she could go back in. Now when it's raining she goes right away then runs to the stairs and we go back inside.
either you can leave your dog out until it's use to the rain or train your dog to use either a litter box/pittle pad inside your home.
