Question:HE IS 7 WEEKS OLD AND HE BITES AND GOES WILD WHEN I PUT IT ON HIM. IS IT TOO EARLY TO PUT HIM ON A LEASH.
Answers:
I don't think it's too early to put him on a leash. The sooner they learn to walk on a leash, the better since they should be walked often. Since the collar really seems to bother him though, you should get him a harness. They have a ring on the back to hook the leash onto and a place for tags on the front. I think it's more comfortable for the dog, especially if you find yourself in a situation where you have to give a tug on the leash, it won't be around his neck.
Way toooo... early 7 weeks is young. Try a harness so you won't injure your puppys neck.
No, you need to keep trying while he is young. And it is never to early to put them on a leash, if they can walk on their own, they can wear a leash and learn to walk beside you. When you put the collar on try distracting him from it with toys and try putting the leash on and getting him out for a walk. He may become more interested in sight seeing than biting on his collar. IF he's 7 wks he should have had his first vaccines and a vet check too. Good luck
Also...Halti brand collars. Work great, like a halter on a horse works.
I would perserve and keep putting it on him in small frequent doses or use one of those halti harnesses for walks. They are really good to help teach him to heel and are more comfy for them and gives you greater control over the dog.
No. Put a muzzle on him. Put the collar on. Let him calm down. After he calms down take the muzzle off and then walk. It really works!
He's not too young to wear a leash, it's all about training. Most dogs don't like the neck leash though, they just become used to it. I would suggest trying a body harness. It's gentle and doesn't yoke them at the neck.
no but you migh have to take it slow. It could take a few days to get him to let you put the colar on. Try standing behinde the dog & aproach him from behinde when putting his collar. Give him a treat when he lets you get it around his neck , continue doing this untill he will alow you to actualy put it on his & continue praiseing him & giving him treats, then do the same thing when he lest you leave it on him for a min. or two, just real praise him & give him treats. This could take a while. Once you are able to get the collar on him leav it on, if he bites at it tell him to leaveit, when he stops biteing praise, & give him a treat, just continue doing this untill he leaves it alone. The treats shold be very small , bite size , not a huge dog bone, or even one of the small milk bone dog bomes , I would break the milk bones into 6 or 7 small pieces, & give him one at a time when he does what you ask. He will catch on eventualy. If you still cant get the collar on him I would take him to Pet smart & see if there dog trainner can help you out, or can sugest something else. Good Luck
a leash is WAAAAYY too young. obviously, he's not done with the vaccines and the viruses and bacteria that could be lurking around in the neighborhood... which could KILL your puppy!
the collar, however, you should put on. whether he likes it or not, he'll have to get used to it. otherwise, what if your dog runs away? how will other people know that its your dog? if you dont get your dog used to it now, it will become worse.
maybe you're making it too tight? make it a little more loose maybe? (but not too loose as it can come off easily since he's still a puppy)
Your puppy is way to young to have a collar at this stage. I would suggest as a vet to give your puppy time and he should be ready once he hits adulthood. (Around one year old)
If this problem pesists, see your local vet.
well keep trying and if it does not work get somting more comfortable for his/her neck
He is too young for both a collar and a leash. If you feel you need your puppy to wear a collar, I strongly suggest using a kitty collar.
Start using a harness it will help him calm down. He will react to the harness as well, ensure that you give him enough lead on the leash to jump and go on. He will get used to it then you can start with your walks. My little yorkie didnt want to have collar until 8mnths old. I dont really like collars as I have seen some dogs get caught up on things or fences and forced their way out but didnt succeed and ended up chocking to death.
I would advise using a harness, it also helps prevent the dog from pulling and they learn pretty quick.
Get a light weight thin collar and keep trying. Your pup needs to get used to a collar, not only for walking, but he needs to have id tags. You can start leash training him, just dont drag him or go very far. Try practicing in your yard then walk him gradually. Dont want to walk him real far or strenuously while he is so young, but he needs to get used to the idea.
Hi mac225, no, the puppy is not too young for a collar. Try putting it on with a nice smelly treat in your hand like cheese. The puppies attention will be drawn to the treat while you slip on the collar. He will the get used to it easily.
