I would say mix in some of your old food and switch him over more gradually. Better pet foods are more rich, which can cause an upset tummy. You should be taking as long as three weeks to switch. 75% old food, 25% new food the first week, 50/50 the second week, 25% old, 75% new the third week, and 100% new food the fourth week. This will give your pup plenty of time to adjust to the new food.
I sympathize though...I have a Boston Terrier and they are KNOWN for their gaseousness. He'll be sleeping and I'll hear a little sqqqueeeek...and UGH!
Did you switch it cold turkey or did you mix it over time so that he would be able to adapt to the differnce in foods?
Sudden food changes - even if its to a better quality food will cause gastric upset.
Buy a small bag of the old food and mix it in over the next 7 - 10 days.
some things affect differently than others. Are you sure it's a BETTER food? If yes, the gassy period ought to lessen with time, it's system hasn't adjusted to something in the new formulation.
Many higher quality foods contain more veggies and such and since your pooch is not used to this, they cause excess gas. It should lessen in a short time, and if not, it may not actually be better food.
You may need the gas mask, but your dog is experiencing pain or discomfort. I bet his poop does look crappy, he is bloated, and drinks like crazy.
All "commercial" food suck!
BTW, when you say "gassey lol" i can assure you it ain;t no matter of laugh for the pup!
My sister had a major gas problem with her dog. The vet reccomended yogurt for the dog. I think they make yogurt in a pill also for animals. It worked wonders!
Check with your vet my dog was really gassy and they put him on a medicine dog food and then gradually added some ordinary dog food until he wasn't gassy anymore
