Question:I have a 6 month old female Jack Russell, (whom is relatively calm for her breed). I take her to the park and dedicate alot of time to her. She loves attention!! In the last month, I have realized that she waits at the window for myself or my fiance to get home. We both have busy schedules and sometimes work overtime, but we still make time for her everyday.
We have considered getting her a companion (another Jack Russell) to have around her when we are at work. Since she is still a puppy, is this a good idea? I don't want her to feel like she is being replaced, yet I also don't want her to be lonely for part of her day. Any suggestions? Can two Jack Russells get along?

I have 2 Jacks :) we rec'd our first Jack Dunny as a wedding present and he too is very calm & very person oriented. A year later, as remuneration for services, we got a sister to Dunny - and it was the best thing for him!! He sometimes puts on this act like he doesnt like his little sis - but he loves her!! And she loves him.My husbands a teacher & Im in health care - so someone is home pretty regularly. But Ive definitely found that having 2 has kept his spirits up.He used to act all depressed when we went off to work - now he has built in entertainment.
Id say yes 2 Jack Russells is a wonderful thing.
They most certainly can get along.
The real question to ask is if you can handle two young puppies. If you can, then I don't see the problem in getting her a friend. I suggest bringing your current dog along with you when you go to get this new puppy, if you do. This way you can see which one is the best fit for you and your current baby.
I don't know a whole lot about Jack Russells but if you are going to add another one I would highly suggest adding it while yours is young so she doesn't get intimidated and so the two dogs will grow up with each other... It is much easier to add another puppy while your first one is still young then when she is an adult... We added another puppy and it was the best thing we could do for our first puppy! Good Luck!!!
Of course two Jack Russels can get along. Two females tend to get along best or a male and female. However make sure both are fixed so that you don't have any accidental breedings on your hands and make sure you can afford another dog before you buy or rescue/adopt one. I always think it's best for dogs to have a playmate. It's very hard for a dog to spend it's days alone. Very few dogs are solitary dogs and would do better alone but there are some. Check petfinder.com it will list all of the shelters and rescues by breed if you wish and zipcode and you can find dogs who need a good home. Your dog may be upset at first that she is no longer the only dog in the household but once she gets used to having another dog around they will soon be inseperable. It has happened to all of our dogs. I would never be without two ever again. Good luck finding your dog a new friend.
Try the jack russell terrier club of america. They have breeders all over the country. They breed for many desire able characteristics. You can access their site at www.jrtca.com. There are also many local clubs depending on what state you live in. You can find all of this on the website above. There is a ton of information on this site. Two of the opposite sex seem to get along better than same sex. Don't keep them confined together in a small area or crate. One dog will always try to exhibit dominance and this can lead to a bad scene. Good luck.
We used to have two Jack Russell's. A boy and girl. the boy was hit by a car two years ago and it devastated the girl. She is completely deaf and depended a lot on her brother. We couldn't adopt for a long time after the boy died. Finally last August we adopted a German Short Hair from the Humane Society. She and our JRT get along very well and and great companions for each other. I am a big believer in friends for your dogs. They are a pack animal and need to have others around them. She is young enough that she really won't think she is being replaced. There might be a little bit of comepteing for awhile but then they will get in cahoots and love each other. Plus JRT's are so much fun! I can't wait to adopt another one! Good Luck!!
I have a Jack Russell and a springer spaniel, we bought the spaniel when the jack russell was around 1 year old and the springer still knows that the jack russel is boss!
