small dog=BIG problems. If you are dog-FREE now just stay that way
yes, if you are looking at a litter of puppies do not pick the runt. they usually end up having problems in the future.
I love my miniature Dachshund. She is stubborn and they are difficult to housebreak. But they are good lap dogs and loyal. They don't like children added to the house after them! My dog doesn't like the grandbaby. She is smart enough to know not to growl or snap at her, but she doesn't like her.
Firstly, make sure you are getting a dog for the right reasons, they are NOT a fashion accessory!

Consider why you want a dog, your reasons should influence the breed you get.

Also consider a dog from an animal shelter, they may not be pure breeds but are usually very loving and you are doing a good thing by adopting one!

There are a several websites that have questionaires to find your ideal breed.

Consider that the cute fluffy puppy needs more grooming than the short coated dog, needing daily grooming, and all dogs need daily care and exercise!
Yes! THINK VERY HARD WHY YOU WANT A DOG. Then consider your lifestyle; do you have TIME and PATIENCE to dedicate to the wellbeing and training of a dog. Will you take the dog for long walks, will you play with it?

THEN; research EVERYTHING on how to take care of a dog. Food, innoculations, wormings, etc...grooming, clipping toenails...what you need to buy.

THIRDLY; THOUROUGHLY research how to train a dog...potty training, leash training, no biting, coming to you. Find a good training school ahead of time to teach you to be a good trainer of your dog.

Then research dog breeds you are interested in. REALLY research them. Easy with the www. Find out EVERYTHING there is to know. Then think if you want a purebred or a mixed breed. If the latter, CONSIDER from what you have learned, what traits the mix might likely have.

Lastly...find one. Not from a pet shop. Not from a designer dog breeder not pet breeder who knows nothing...but from a reputable purebred dog breeder, or a GOOD rescue group.
