From personal experience I find that mild anxiety can be treated with a gentle massage. I have used Rescue Remedy for my Yorkie who has Fear Anxiety and it sure does the trick. This can also be used by humans and is available at Health Food Stores, some grocery stores with an Herbal section. This is made from homeopathically prepared flower extracts.

Check at the pet store, they sell a plug in scent that for some reason reminds the dog of their mother. It's a special odor that you can't smell but it seems to work well with dogs that have trouble being separated by their owners. My sister used it for her dog that barked everytime she left, she is now free to go when ever without being concerned about her best friend. Ask, what can it hurt. There not very expensive.

Okay I know it's crazy but when one of my dogs got anxious it would sneak a drink of my coffee. As it grew older,it would go to kitchen counter below coffeepot and beg. A few sips and Ewok was calm again. I tried decaf and he refused to drink it.
Don't know why but it worked for him.
Some hyperactive children are calmed by caffeine so I guess it works on dogs too.

yes, if the dog has something that it fears then you need to help him or her to face their fear. SO if it is something like a vacume then make the dog sit and show them that the vacume won't hurt them. Anxiety usually comes out if the dog has a fear of something.
