Are you doing it slowly or quickly? Slow is calming. Fast may be taken as invitation to play.
What do you mean - smooth a dog ?? I have 10 dogs, none get excited then growl or suck on clothes ! Does'nt sound very normal to me.

Are you sure they are growling? Many dogs "talk" when you make a fuss of them. How do you approcah a dog? Quietly & gently usually makes them react quietly & gently too.
you didn,t say how old you are but some dogs do act funny when a girl or woman is menstruating you might have a lot of visitors in your house and they will never know but a dog always knows
