Question:we have a wild black bird in our garden that seems to have lost its tail feathers and so cannot fly, the question is will its feathers grow back or is it now stuck to only be able to wonder and jump??
Answers:
Yes thet will grow back in the next moult
they will grow back eventually but if it cant fly then it has victim written all over it. watch out for foxes and puddy tats.
Feathers on birds are like hair on an animal - they moult at certain times, and grow new ones. It happens every year, and if they lose a tail to a cat or dog, then they will grow a new one, as long as the flesh hasn't been damaged.
We've had parakeets & cockatiels that lost their tailfeathers either due to picking them out themselves, or them falling out naturally. I guess it's the same for wild birds.
If a bird is designed for flying more than ground feeding or roosting, nature generally provides them the ability to recover important feathers needed for them and must have to survive to enabl them to control their flight, and true in wing feathers also, to maintain balance.
it's tail feathers shouldn't be the only feathers allowing it to fly but they will eventually grow back.
Wild birds tend to lose their tail feathers when they get close to getting caught by a predator. Think of it the same as a lizard. It's ok though. It will grow back. It might be eaten in the meantime.
All feathers are replaced every so often. It's a process called 'moulting'. It would be unusual for most birds to lose all their tail-feathers at once, so either your bird is sick, or has met with some traumatic incident, such as a cat or dog almost killing it
First, all birds moult all their feathers each year, this means that they replace all their feathers including tail feathers.
Secondly, birds can fly even without tail feathers.
Birds will molt, which is to lose old feathers and regrow new ones, at least annually. So the answer is yes. It will take a while to regrow them however and if this bird can not fly it may end up on a cat's dinner plate before they grow in.
yes they will grow bk
The feathers will grow back.
If they were plucked during an attack by a predator (cat, hawk etc.) during the non-molt period they would still grow back. In fact the process of replacing the lost feathers starts straight away, but they do take some time to grow the full length. For the casual observer it would seem that he'll be tail-less for some time when in fact the new feathers are already developing. There is no link between a tail-less adult bird and its inability to fly. There must be something else wrong with him. If it is a fledgling, it is normal for him to hop 'round the nest area for a while until he fully masters the ability to fly.
