Can I buy a Parakeet as a mate for a cockatiel?

Question:I have a COCKATIEL. But It's very lonely. I really wanna buy it a mate for itself. Can I buy a parakeet as a mate for it? Will it survive? How will it react?

Hello. I have had that question myself. But thankfully, i know the answer now. It is a definate NO that you can not breed a Male Cockateil with a Female Parakeet. First of all because their instincts only attract them to the same breed. Second of all, cockateils have much larger eggs. The egg bearing of your parakeet would probably not turn out to well. Thrird, both breeds have a different set of chromosones and a different DNA structure. If in all ways, the parakeet did lay an egg from the cockateil, the baby would have some physical destortion. But, that is not cabable because your parakeets body would reject your cockateils "genes", if you know what i mean. I know it is difficult to understand because different breeds of dogs can mate, but birds, just must be alot more picky. I hope this helps.

Parakeets and cockateils do not cooperate well together. Your parakeet would probably be stressed because cockateils a a bit larger than parakeets. That would probably end in a teritory fight, and a dead parakeet. You should buy a cockateil of the opposite sex. Your bird may be ready to breed. It really depends. Birds don't always get along with other birds, just like people. Make sure you keep them separate at first until they learn to like each other, but parakeets and cockatiels work fine most of the time. If the bird is just lonely, I would not get a cage-mate because then you may wind up with an untame bird because it bonds to the parakeet and not with you. Try buying the bird some new toys to keep it occupied first.
They can and often do get along just fine with one another living in the same cage- but you should introduce them slowly and see how they react to each other before leaving them together. They will never be "mates" so to speak- but they can become very good friends.
I've had that combo before, and all they do is become buddies. No inter breeding. Even tho' they are in the same species of animal, they aren't the same. If you want to breed, get the oposite sex of cockatiel. If you just want your bird to have company, a parakeet will be fine.
What do you mean in the word " mate".Do you mean like a friend or more than a friend. If you mean a friend then yes they will get along, the parakeet may be more aggressive and bully the cackatiel around(dont let their size fool you).Even though budgies are bossy, they are great with other bird.
You might be able to keep them in a cage together as pals but they can't ever be "mates" since being mates means being a breeding pair. A budgie and cockatiel are different species and can't produce offspring.
It depends, how much friendship they make. Birds are not like people, so maybe, maybe not.
