Am I doing the right thing?

Question:Well, we recently lost one of our cockatiels (she died from egg bound) and we had one left. He is about 19 years old. After losing 2 females from egg bound we didnt want to anymore bird, not knowing if they were gona be a male or female. Well without his "true love" he seem sad. I put a mirrior in his cage, hoping to make him happier. I'm spoling him with treats and a spend a little time each day with him. Since he hates hands, he is in his cage all day, though i take him out once in a while. I dont understand stand though... why is he hissing at me when i walk by the cage? Im giving him love everyday, but it doesn't seem to be working. I want him to be happy after losing 2 of his wifes in life. What else can i do for him to make him happier and his last days the best?

(He whistles and sings all day. Could that be a sign of happiness)?

Answers:
The mirror is a good idea so he doesn't die of a broken heart. When Benji (one of my cockatiels) lost his mate, I put a beanie baby in his cage for him to snuggle with. He never was all that tame, but he wouldn't bite or be mean. He just kind of tolerated us because his mate liked us. After she died, he does hiss at us and fluff up, but he doesn't bite and he did get better after a month or so. He still sings, whistles and talks to us and will allow the occasional scratch, but he certainly lets us know that we are NOT his friends! Because your bird is so old, I wouldn't get him another mate. Females tend to be the ones that die from the broken heart, and chances are, he'll die first. Just give him time, lots of attention, and maybe something to snuggle with (but not those snuggle hut things, they can eat the fabric and die!)
I'm so sorry about your other bird, I hope your cockatiel gets better soon!

well hes probably depressed even though he seems happy.try buying him a new friend.or call you vet.
I'm sorry :(

He's probably going through a stage so if you don't mind caring for him, why not?
If he saw you take the females body away, he is probably upset with you.

Try walking by his cage SLOWLY and don't stop. He hisses to get you to go away.

When you do spend time with him, keep the door to the cage open. This will help show him what you look like without bars across your face.

I am VERY impressed that you have been able to give him such a great life that he has lived to 19 years! GREAT JOB!

If he is whistling, he is getting over her and trying to keep himself happy. The mirror in his cage was a great idea.

If he does not like hands, don't put your hand in there. That will make him happy.

Sounds like you are doing a wonderful job.
Your poor tiel is pining away for a mate he's lost two now to eggbinding. Which begs the question when your hens were eggbound, what exactly did you do to help them?
After your first did you not read up to look out for the signs of egg binding ?
Did you not look at the diet you feed your tiels.?
I suggest you buy him a mate.
And as for "once in a while" out of cage time thats ludicrous its a bird a pet a family member
I suggest at least 3-4 hours a day outside of cage EVERY DAY not once in a while

Your bird is telling you he wants to be left to grieve for his mate. The best thing you can do is to spend more time with him,but from a distance. Be around your bird, let him see you, talk to him,but not close to his cage. As time goes on, slowly each day,try moving closer to his cage.He needs time, just as we all do when we lose a loved one.If he is eating well and drinking, doing all what he normally does and is not showing signs of illness, he should be ok. If things do not improve, seek advice from your vet.
kill him its only humane
