Question:I think it fell out of a nest thats been there for a few months. It's not really really young, but it can't fly yet and it been sleeping right outside our front door for the last several days and it always stays within our front yard. It looks like a normal pigeon just smaller and with all its feathers grown in except the one's on its head. It has yellow feathers growing on its head and yeah thats it. i've seen it peck at the grass a few times, but thats it. Can I do anything about it?
Answers:
The bird is a fledgling. Baby birds fledge (leave the nest) several days before they can fly. They hop around on the ground and climb low branches until their wings have strengthened enough for flight. The parent birds continue to feed and care for the fledglings until they are self sufficient. Leave the bird alone, keep cats, dogs and kids out of the area, and he should be gone in a few more days.
Maybe you could go to an animal shelter and ask them what would be the best solution. You could try to feed it, but I'm not sure what at this stage. Make sure it has water and isn't in full sunlight. I hope you find a solution. Just try to help it not die.
Ok, this was taken from a question that mumbles posted (just a few hours ago, so check it out if you want)
"have been reading through all the different questions and advice about what to do if you find a baby bird. Please if you do not know 100% what to do then please don't answer, you could be killing the baby bird.
1. Leave it alone unless it is in danger (cat or dog)
2. If you must move place in box & keep warm.
3. Call a licensed Wild Life rehabber.
4. Never, Never try and feed yourself
5. Vets, non-emergency police can give you number for rehabbers in your area."
He has been a licensed rehabber for 10 years.
don't touch it,,, if you do mom will leave it to die,,, but if she's no where to found,, perhaps you need to call your local animal contorll.
put water out and wild bird seed. sounds like hes old enough to eat on his own, but may not be able to fly yet. or u can try a nature center
if it is a pigeon it would be ok to put it in its nest if u can. it wont hurt them to be touched. i touch my baby pigeons all the time
doesn't make any sense. if it's been out of it's nest for a few months and needed to be in a nest it would be dead. baby birds are only in nests for like 1 month anyway.
A bird that can't fly can't escape predators so on the ground is not a great place for it. You could try feeding it and taking care of it until it's ready to fly but how much time do you have? Is there a local humane society that takes wild birds? Otherwise if it isn't getting food, it will probably die a slow painful death by starvation. If all else fails, call Animal Control and they can remove it. Hope that helps.
CliffyDuckie is correct.
Also, please realized that most birds are protected by law, and you can end up in heaps of trouble if caught with one in your possession, unless you are a licensed rehabilitator.
If it's fully feathered, it probably didn't fall out of the nest. Many baby birds (including pigeons) leave the nest on their own before they're completely adult. Just leave it alone and it should be fine. The parents will still feed it until it's old enough to fend for itself.
Now, I'm not sure what your first sentence means. If the bird has been by your door for a few months, it's past being a baby. It's simply an adult bird that can't fly for some reason (injured or whatever). In that case, you can try taking it to a local vet or humane society and see if they can fix it up.
Finally, it's completely untrue that the parents will ignore the baby if you touch it. If you need to handle it (like to move it to a sheltered area away from predators, for example), you won't be hurting it at all.
I "saved" a baby pigeon once.
It was the biggest pain in the butt I ever carried home.
The bird "Beeped" constantly and was sort of capable of flight. After awhile I remembered that pigeons don't really fly around much anyway. They only do short distances.
After a few days of "beeping" and my cats always trying to eat pigeon, I finally released the dumb thing.
I swear that my bird didn't fall out of the nest. I swear that it was pushed.
Your bird is about as developed as mine was. You can probably ditch it in a park like I did with Beep.
