A question about chickens?

Question:Hi. Does anyone know what the use of having a rooster around is for? Especially when the hen does not need a rooster in order to mate and lay eggs? Please give me more information on the matter! =)

Answers:
Actually the hen does need a rooster to mate- but she can lay unfertilized eggs without him. Only fertilized eggs laid after mating with the rooster can hatch into chicks.

A rooster in the chicken coop can also make the hens feel more secure, and stimulate them to lay eggs more regularly.

Rooster are farmers' alarm clocks!
so the egg will hatch into a chicken, eggs without a rooster can only be eaten
Because it encourages the chickens to lay eggs as they think that the eggs have a chance in being fertilised.
You might need more chickens one day, if the chicken egg isn't fertilized you won't have chicks.
Some people use them as fighting cocks. <- :o Was I allowed to use that word? Oh well. Personally, I think it's inhumane to strap blades on the feet of a chicken, and force them to kill each other for amusement.

Or maybe people just like a very life-like, feathery alarm clock?
the is for fertilization of the egg once it is layed the rooster goes and fertilizes it and it makes a chick
besides that nothing
I agree with clairey, and additionally I think a rooster is a good protector for the hens. I mean, he's got those nasty spurs on his feet, so think of all the damage he could do!
I don't see a reason to have a rooster, except if there is any danger like an animal trying to get them the rooster will fight and protect them. We have chickens and our roosters are mean. They will peck you really hard. They also crow during the day and get annoying. I don't guess you need a rooster unless you are planning on hatching chicks, that's why we have some. Good luck with your chickens!
Reasons to keep a rooster
1) Fertile eggs
2) Crowing
3) Protection of hens (In a cage where there is a rooster your death rate of chickens will go down.)
4) To be the peacemaker in the group. (My rooster’s most important job is to keep peace among my hens. In coops where there are only hens there is much bickering. But, when there is a rooster there he keeps them in order.)
5) Many people keep roosters for yard decoration. These are the fancy breeds such as the Polish bird.
6) He is part of the chicken family. I see my rooster spend time with all my birds even the hens and the chicks. Every one feels more comfortable when he is around.
7) If you do not keep a rooster one of your hens will become one. Not literally. But she will take charge of all that is in the coop. She will even stop laying. So if you want all your hens to lay get a rooster.

Reasons to not keep a rooster
1) Some roosters are not very nice to their hens and can be visous during the mating process. These roosters can actually cause their hens to lay fewer eggs.
2) You don't want fertile eggs. But the truth of the matter is fertile eggs are the same as the non-fertile ones. A chick will not developed in the egg if you take it within three days after it was laid and put it into the fridge.

Also hens do not need a rooster to lay eggs. Laying eggs is a cycle just like when a woman gets her period. It just happens.
Some hens lay more than others. It has nothing to do with the rooster. Battery hens (The ones that lay the eggs you buy in the store) Never are in contact with a rooster. They just lay so many eggs because of breeding, and medications.
