Question:Where I work, they ahve several cages with parrots and one with 2 love birds. One of the love birds died. Will the other survive without his partner? I found out that other birds have died also in the last 6 months. They seem to have food and water and toys, but they are never let ouit of their acges. Can this be a reason for their death? I want to investigate and take the necessary measures.
Answers:
It depends. If the bird might have been close to its mate then it will probably be calling for it the first few days since it was gone.
I had a pair of love birds. The male died and the female kept on callingafter it for 3 days. It's a long story. But what you can do is hand raise her for now - ONLY if she doesn't seem to get along with another bird you got her.
hope that helps.
My friend Dan bought a love bird, and it didn't survive longer than a few weeks. But later he found out it may have just suffocated from the incense he was burning so often when he bought a pair and the same thing happened.
i have 2 luv birds but on e escaped and recently the other one has been fine, its been happier actually!
The love bird will be fine without a friend. BUT before getting another bird, I would investigate what is causing the deaths. Where do you work?
It is not true at all that love birds need a mate to live !I used to breed them for 6 years and have had many gave to me as a rescue ..the fact is with you have 2 birds together they bond to eachother an not to you .99% of love birds in pet stores are siblings NOT mates when we breed them and bring them into the pet stores we send in a clutch **the babies**
yes the other one will survive and do not believe the myths. it may have been his partner, did you see them fighting, though you should put the other surviver with another lovebird to keep him company while youre gone? how old was it? and yes you should give them time everyday out of their cage. but did you see anything wrong with him, before he died? and then you can check it up why. hope this helped
The other lovebird will be fine! For a few days he/she will seem sad but over time they'll like having the extra space and not having to share food. lol My lovie is more vocal and more playful and was much easier to tame too. If they food the birds are eating is just seed they are probably getting fatty liver disease which will cause ultimately cause death. but not taking them out of the cages will affect their mental health. Some may be mroe likely to pluck and or scream.
Well done Holly. Love Birds are actually good pets when kept alone. Very good talkers too. Females tend to be nasty but the males tend to be very good childrens pets. Pet Stores tend to sell siblings as pairs and that is what's happening to the love birds in general. The genetics are being ruined by to close of genetics by inbreeding. You think they are a pair, when in fact they are so closely related.
The love bird will be just fine. It will go through the morning period just like humans do, but it will be just fine unless there is an underlying reason for the other birds death. I'd watch it's fecal matter and see if it changes. Birds hide if they are sick until it's almost to late. This pet store should be taking it to a vet to be seen, since it's cage mate died. This lovebird should also be under quarentine for the next 30 days too. But to often pet stores see the dollar signs and not enough care.
Good Luck!
I don't think so. It really depends how long they were bonded. 90% chance not, though.
Hi,
The lovebird will survive but be very lonely, I would suggest getting it a mate. As far as the other birds dying I would contact the humane society and let them know, they might have a disease. They won't die from not being let out of their cage. Hope this helps.
Michele
