Question:okay i found these birds in the bushes my brothers cut th bushes now the baby birds are exposed to the hot sun !!
can we move the nest with out making the mother leave them !!?? i need answer please !! oh by the way we own a young cat and dog
Answers:
If you can move it just a bit, so that it has shade, but is not too far from where the parents had it, yes you can. It is not true that the parents will abandon the nest. Birds do not have a good sense of smell, so they will not smell your scent on the nest.
Be extremely careful when you move it. And do not get upset if the baby birds are gone soon. Baby birds fledge (leave the nest) before they can fly. Once they get most of their feathers, they fledge and hop around on the ground, climb low branches and exercise their wings until they are strengthened enough for flight. The parents will continue to feed and care for the fledglings until they are self-sufficient, so resist the urge to "rescue" them when you see them on the ground. Just keep the cat indoors and the dog on a leash until the babies are flying.
And next time, wait until the nesting season is over to trim your bushes.
edit - ignore anyone that tells you the mother will abandon the nest. Wildlife biologists and bird banders handle nests and baby birds all the time with their bare hands. The mothers never abandon them. You can see pictures here: http://www.wbu.com/chipperwoods/photos/p...
no you can't touch the nest, if the mother smells human scent on her babies she wont feed them anymore...or if her nest is placed somewhere else she will also leave them. If you can try to keep your dog and cat indoors and place something if front of them where the bush used to be...like a potted plant or a few potted plants. Watch them for a few days to make sure the mom is still caring for them, if she isn't then contact your vet he will know what to do.
Don't listen to the people that know nothing about birds saying 'no! the parents will smell you' because birds have a VERY dull sense of smell. They won't be able to smell you.
You can move the nest just a LITTLE BIT. It has to be close to the original spot so the parent sknow where they are.
Do not touch the nest or babies. You can place a large piece of plywood above the nest to protect the babies from sun and rain. Place the plywood high enough so the mother and father bird can get to the babies. Make sure the board is wedged in the tree so the wind does not make it fall on the babies. You can drill a hole on each side of the board to tie it on the upper branches for added protection.
