A New Air Conditioner For My Birds?

Question:I have a small air conditioner in the room where my birds are. It is constantly icing up, so I went to inquire about purchasing a new one and having it professionally installed. The one I have now works, but ices up and has to be shut off until the ice melts off .It dosent have a removable cover so I can get in and clean off the coils, which are covered with dirt and I suppose its whats making the unit ice up.I was just wondering if anyone out there, maybe an air conditioner installer, knows if a new unit would give off any odor, that could harm my birds.I know some appliances give off a smell when they are new. Also is there any teflon inside the unit that could heat up(maybe around the motor ? ) and any chance of any gas/freon escaping into the room? This room is very enclosed and not wide open.I remember reading about someone who had a central air conditioner that broke down 2 days after the owner found all his birds dead.Seems some gas had leaked out and killed his birds.

Nope, the birds will be fine. We just installed a new a/c at my pet store and have been watching the animals closely (we had the same fear) and they're all doing great!

Don't think you need to worry about freeon (how-do-you-spell-it) since that's taboo. The environmental protection agency does'nt allow it since.. well, I was still young, anyway!

For me, the danger about air cons is black, cruddy, moldy, mildew that grows in that wet dirt. If it gives PEOPLE lung disorders, what about birds? I talked to as very sick, sad man in Texas, who'd gotten such a mould IN his lungs from thirty years of working in air-con. Normally birds fly. And to do so they take in incredible amounts of air. I believe they even sort of use their bones. We can take a walk, get some fresh air. Not the birds!

But if the thing refrigerates, Kathy, I'll bet there's somebody with a screwdriver and a wrench who can find a way to open it, and clean it. Probably an old guy, or a Jack-of-all-trades, NOT your local Carrier sales representative! Ha!

This one get me in trouble? Sionarra
