Is it possible to "potty train" house bound birds [to go in a certain spot]?

Question:I was just wondering if it was possible to teach maybe a parrot or a duck (or any bird for that matter) to go to the bathroom on, say a pad i leave in the corner.

Answers:
Yes it is but you need to be careful.

You time the times they poop & have a command ready, so when it's just about time for them to poop, you take them to where ever you want them to poop & say "go poo" & wait until they do, then offer treat or say good boy/girl after they have.

Problem with this is many people successfully train their birds to poop in one spot only & if the birds cannot get to this spot for some reason they hang on. This is reason bad for their health. You need to train them to poop in a few spots that are very easily available to the bird at all times. EG, only poop on newspaper & have news paper scattered through the house as well as in the bird cage.

Another mistake people make is potty training to 'go poo' outside the cage, once the cage has opened for the first in the mornings. My adopted sun conure has been taught this. Because of this she refuses to poop in her cage, she'll hang on all day if she has too to be let out to poop. It's very hard to reverse it.

So, be very careful on how exactly you toilet train your birds.

yes. everytime u see it wants 2 go poopoo, gesture 4 it 2 go were u want it 2 go. do it 4 a few days or a couple weeks. it will work
Yes, but it's not really healthy for them. When they gotta go, they gotta go. You CAN learn to sense when they are ready to go, shift them over to the spot, and tell them to "do it", and they will. It takes a while, but you'll learn the signs.

A parrot generally needs to go every 15 mins or so. Sometimes if they are relaxed, it can last 30 mins or even 2 hours. At night, they will wait until morning (and then WATCH OUT!).

But inevitably, the certain spot they seem to like to go the best is on your shoulder, when you're wearing a clean shirt that you just put on. LOL.
Yes it is you have to designate a spot like a certain play stand or perch and say go potty or whatever else you want to say and they will need to go about every 15-20 minutes and when they do it right make a huge deal out of it and give a small tasty snack as a reward.. My Eclectus is housebroken he has never pooed on me and best of all he trained hisself lol.. Just something he does.. My Goffins is learning potty training so keep up with it and best of luck
Definitely. Parrots can be "potty trained". I trained my Macaw to potty over a garbage can every twenty minutes. I would bring him over the can and ask him to "go potty". When he did I would tell him he was a good boy. If I forgot to ask him he would get very grumpy and in his own way he would tell me he had to go. The days I got home late from work he would have very few droppings in his cage. It became clear to me that he was trying so hard to please me that he would hold it in for as long as he could. I spoke to my vet and he told me I should discourage my bird from only going potty over a garbage can. I've un "potty trained" my bird although he still would tell me when it was time.
