Different kinds of birds should always be kept in seperate cages. Normally happy birds can become aggressive.
Also, please take a close look at the distance between the bars on the cage you were describing (big enough for a parrot.) When bird cages are designed, the distance between bars is taken into consideration. For example, you will notice that finch cages have bars that are very very close together, while parrot cage bars are rather far apart. This is a safety design. If you were to put a cockatiel in a parrot cage, the cockatiel could possibly squeeze it's body through the bars, or (even worse) squeeze his head through and get it stuck.
Actually, budgies (parakeets) as well as lovebirds can be very aggressive towards other birds, including cockatiels. Why do you want to add another bird to the same cage? All of our birds are in seperate cages excluding the breeder pair of budgies. Just get another bird and have a seperate cage for it. That way they'll have a friend, but will still have their own space:-)
More cockatiels would be the best, but budgies would usually live with a cockatiel.

A male cockatiel will. An English Parakeet might ( Not an American Parakeet). Cockatiels are kinda passive..and sweet. All birds are not that way..
I'd simply try another cockatiel..in a cage next to it..and let them know each other first..and let them decide.
