Question:just showed up outside my house, it has something around it's leg and is back today but now is trying to get into my garage. It won't let me get close enough to pick it up but seems to want to be in my garage. Maybe it's owner keeps it's cage in a garage? Do homing pigeons even get lost? What can I do to help it? If i caught it, where can I take it? I moved from Phila. a year ago and this is the 1st pigeon I've even seen in my area(NC). Very strange. Need help. Thanks.

They can get lost for a number of reasons: Finding a mate in a different flock, getting separated from its flock while flying in unfamiliar territory and being too tired or hungry to find its way back, something it spotted looks more appealing than its home does to them. Etc… etc…

There are instructions on how to read a pigeon’s band and if all else fails, an active message board filled with pigeon fanciers. You can also "Google" parts of the numbers and letters and sometimes a hit will come up that refers to the pigeon club/owner.
well maybe try letting it in your garage then catch it. I'm sure homing pigeons get lost sometimes.are you sure the thing around its leg is a message? But if you do catch it (and it does have a message), see what the message says and post signs "found pigeon with message that says "..."" unless the message is personal(but then why would they tie it to their birds leg?) or you could contact animal control and see what they say to do. yes they can get lost if you catch it you said it has a band you look at it and i has a company and you call them and give them the band number and they will tell you who the owner lives and will give you there number i had roller pigeons and sometimes they would get lost and i would get calls from people saying that they have my bird
this happened to my neighbor and my friend first w/ permision try trap the bird in your garage then try to catch it of get a large aivary net after the bird is caught read the band on his leg it ussally has a phone number then call the owner!
