Question:what exactly does this mean and can they still fly?
what purpose would you get this done for?

Hi there:
Clipping your birds wings is really not that big of a deal. I actually think it makes it safer to have, care for and play with your bird.
Usually, the first 6 flight wings are clipped. Your bird will still be able to glide to the ground. I have seen some pet stores clip wings even further. Those birds just DROP to the ground.
I have 4 birds and I clip everyone's wings and talons myself (with a helper to hold the birds).
I think it is safer because the birds won't be flying off into windows or the ceiling fan or candles....
It's also nicer because they will come to rely on you if they do glide to the ground. You can tame them easier and almost teach them to "come" on command.
I've actually taken my tiel to the park. She loves to get out, people love to see and play with her AND she can't really get far/away because her wings are clipped.
If you decide to take your bird out...make sure it's not a windy day because the wind can carry them even if they can not fly well.
Goodluck!

it depends where you have it done for what actually happens. but basically it means clipping the birds wing feathers in some way so that it makes it harder or impossible for them to fly, meaning you would find it easier to tame them.
some places wil just clip the first 6 primary feathers on both wings, this takes away teh birds initial lift, (meaning they cant get up high) but leaves them with teh secondarys to use as a parachute should they fall from somewhere so that they dont hit the floor like a brick.
some people will clip the secondary feathers on one wing, this leaves the bird unbalanced so if the bird tries to fly he will spin in circles, making him very disorientated.
some people also strip the primary feathers, rather than cutting the feathers off comepltely, they actaully cut aong the feather, removing the feathers bits from the pins that runs through the centre, i dont agree with this method because the pins can become an annoyance to the bird if he sticks them into himself, and also it looks ugly imo.
turkeys and geese are clipped by removing ALL the feathers from one wing, but thats a different type all together realy.
if you were going to consider getting a budge clipped id always try and gofor the top one myself. clipping the primary feathers. its far safer and less stressfull on teh bird.
It will NOT be able to fly but just glide near the floor or fall to the floor It won't hurt them
It will be tamer and you can train him her to sit on your finger, shoulder and stay on you foot
I trained my 2 to do all that
no they will not be able to fly thats the purpose of having it done
no they will not be able to fly,i have never done it with any of my budgies as i dont mind them flying about.
suppose its down to your preference as im sure it will not hurt the bird in any way, mine are tame though even without clipping
clipping your birds wings would lower its chance of flying away. it also makes it more dependent on you and that will help in training it. it could still fly a little. if clipped nice, your bird could still fly.
getting their wings clipped is when you cut a certain feather of the birds wing so they can not fly away. its really for safty. they can't fly but they can hover and say in the air for short distances.i would not do it. they were ment to fly. you just have ton be more careful when there out of the cage and you are opening doors. if you don't let them out of the cage at all then you don't need there wings clipped.
getting the wings clipped (i only do 3 primaries, the first two are left, the the last 2 are left in place. Just the 3 in the middle) means that you cut off a certain portion of the flight feathers (mainly primaries, and in some places, secondaries) so that bird cannot fly away, should you take it outside, and it makes it more dependant on you and easier to train. Depending on how much of the wing is clipped, some can and some can't. My birds that I clipped their wings can glide, so that they dont plummet to the ground like a brick. Doing this in a certain way, so that they can still glide but can't lift off the ground, means that they won't be able to damage their breast bone, or, a keel. It also keeps them from getting injured.
However, if a birds' wings isn't clipped, it can easily fly into a window. SO, if your bird you plan on taming, make sure that you close al windows to avoid this as well. Many a bird has died from flying into windows.
Hope I helped!
when you clip a birds flight feathers which are located under the regular feathers it prevents them from flying. some people have it done so there parakeet or budgie
doesnt peck or fly into anything dangerous.
so its mostly for safety
