Question:We just got a parrotlet. We love him to death and he is very tame. I had his wings clipped for safety reasons. He is not moving in his cage at all. If I sit him on a perch, he stays there. If I put him in the bottom of the cage...he stays there. Will he eventually learn to hop from spot to spot? I am worried. He isn't even moving to his food and water. How long will it take him to learn this? He is 6 and a half weeks old. I have owned birds, but never any that had clipped wings. Serious answers only please:) Thanks!

Your Parrottlet will be fine. Clipping the wings is a great idea on your part. It shows to me you are responsible. I have a pair of Pacific Island Parrottlets. My male "Peep" as I call him, is my baby. He drives my shih-tzu crazy. I want to thank you for being responsible enough to look out for the birds well being. If you leave the longer feathers on the outside the bird will look like he hasn,t been trimmed. He won,t be able to fly more than a few feet either. Parrottlets are precious. Have fun with THE WORLDS SMALLEST PARROTT!
Poor thing, let his wings grow, he will be happier and more friendly.
By the way, if he is not eating or drinking, this shows he is unhappy.. =(
They can still glide a bit even if their wings are clipped. If he is not acting the same there is probably something wrong. Take him to the vet. i think it takes a few weeks.
Don't panic. I've had parrots for over twenty years. He's a young bird and is totally stressed out. You didn't do anything wrong. Trimming flight feathers is safe for the bird and for safety reasons. Keep him very quiet, speak softly and continue his daily routine, as usual.
By the time you receive this, the bird will probably be fine!! If not, I'll check in tomorrow around noon and see if I can help more.
Your baby will be just fine. I have 4 cockatiels and I keep their wings clipped. If you just brought him home he is probably just in shock from the change. I recently brought home 2 new cockatiels ( a few weeks apart) and for the first week they barely moved. Two months later I can't get them to sit still.
By the way - my 4th cockatiel has just returned home after being gone for 2 months. We didn't clip his wings and he flew out the back door. We are very lucky to have found him. Be sure to keep those wings clipped - it's for the best.
Enjoy your new friend and love him bunches!
He's very young, his behaviour is absolutely normal for a baby in a new environment. He will slowly start exploring and will gain confidence quickly, you should see a big difference by tomorrow. I have two as well, great little birds although, (sorry) they're not quite the world's smallest parrot. That distinction goes to the Pygmy parrots of New Guinea.
He can find his way around by climbing stuff.(be sure you feed pellets no seeds) bye.
Oh, poor thing. Since he is little, he plays a lot. Getting his wings clipped is just cruel. Well, at least until an other 2-3 weeks.
It shouldn't matter if the birds wings are clipped. I clipped my parrots wings before and he still moves around. Even when they're not clipped he doesn't fly anyway. He enjoys climbing around the cage to get around.
